Healthy Homes

One of the Healthy Building Network's core principles is that environmentally friendly and healthy buildings must be available and accessible to all people. HBN's goal is to shift large volume commercial purchasers of building materials towards healthier alternatives, and to sunset the manufacture of worst in class products, such as Pressure Treated Wood or PVC plastic. This creates economies of scale that provide the individual consumers with healthier alternatives that are comparable in price and have equal or better performance than conventional options.

The housing market offers many opportunities in pursuit of this goal. Public housing providers, community development corporations, and other workforce housing providers represent large volume purchasers that can transform markets. For that reason, HBN works with these housing organizations to develop health-based selection criteria for use in low-cost housing. Model projects, including HBN's collaboration with the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity and the Unity Homes prototype, also illustrate how careful materials selection can result in affordable, healthy homes.
